So by now I imagine many of you have seen this panel make the rounds here on Tumblr:

And have seen the “controversy” that it’s produced among some members of the fanbase here that write this off as James Roberts promoting ableism either directly or inadvertently. Members of the fanbase, I might add, that haven’t even read the comic in question and are taking this panel completely out-of-context.

For people who claim that they’re merely “critics” of MTMTE, they’ve broken what I consider the first law of critique: Never critique something that you haven’t seen/read/played. It makes you look like both an idiot and a very poor critic.

But let’s get into the meat of the problem here, shall we?

The whole “you haven’t read it so you don’t knoooow” is hilarious given the four prior examples JR has given, which are more than enough to set to rest the ghost of coincidence and mistake.

And the other criticism that diehard fans give to those who critique is “well if you don’t like it, stop reading it” so really I can’t win. I’ve stopped reading something that’s gross and damaging, I see evidence of further gross and damaging behavior, comment on it, WELL YOU DIDN’T EVEN READ IT. No shit I didn’t, I don’t like people with anxiety disorders treated as the butt of jokes. That’s why I stopped reading.

And yeah, “hoist has problems too” does not excuse how Swerve rampantly disrespects people with mental disorders with no other character checking his behavior or calling him a fuckhead. At all.

“Swerve mocks all the gay robots, you can’t mock me because I’m not gay [SECRETLY GAY]” does not make this any less homophobic. So even reading it wouldn’t make it less cruel WHAT A SURPRISE I am shocked.

TLDR people use “he’s not [x] character” as a desperate excuse to explain away behavior that happens every time JR sets pen to paper, behavior whose tone toward mental illness is as understanding and compassionate as the tone of funniest home videos is to children being hit in the face with objects thrown at high velocity.

The only people who don’t see that pattern are willfully in denial.

Then again I’m talking to the person who thinks Bayverse Megs is a good dude because he used robot babies as a living shield, so. Not really one to talk about others being in denial, are you?

Perhaps some of you have heard of Letchworth Village. Perhaps some of you haven’t. I’d like to bring it up as a prime example of truth in fiction. Letchworth, as a quick summary for those of you that are not familiar with it, was a mental institution and asylum in New York. Most of the patients at this institute were dumped there by families that either did not have the means to care for the individuals or they simply did not care.

Conditions were deplorable and it was brought to national attention several times. So why wasn’t it closed down until the late nineties? Why? Funding for the asylum was horrendous, living conditions were deplorable and yet it still functioned, had opened doors, and operated.

Why?

Because people didn’t give a damn about the inmates. Why worry about them when there were other issues to deal with out here?

Now, let’s talk about James Roberts.

Let me tell you something as someone working in the mental health field. Firstly, this is a very real and very special topic to me. Let me tell you something else, JRo isn’t condoning nor making light of the issue of mental health and its treatment by people in media and, as an extension, everyday life. Shockingly enough, there are individuals in our world and times that don’t find mental health very important, they make light of it, they lampoon and parody it. They simply do not care.

By having characters that so obviously make light of the issue, that just don’t care, Mr. Roberts is making a very bold social commentary. Mainly that there are individuals in the world that just don’t care about being “politically correct” about mental health and the issues that the people dealing with them face.

And as someone that has seen a lot of the field, I actually find James Roberts to be a very good writer when dealing with this issue. His depiction of Rotorstorm as an emotional cripple dealing with severe mental trauma is perfectly true to life. His depiction of Rung as a caring therapist pleases me because too often psychiatrists and psychologists are portrayed in an entirely negative light, as corrupt or sadistic or simply not understanding the needs of the patient.

Just because several characters don’t care about it or poke fun at it doesn’t insinuate that the author himself condones or supports it in any way. Allow me to reiterate my point to you: that is just truth in fiction. A sad truth, perhaps, but truth nonetheless. People don’t care, people don’t take pains to understand. People don’t educate themselves and as sad as I am to say it, I’ve seen and heard of cases where the members of one’s own family don’t bother to educate, care, or support the person in question.

And all this chatter about James Roberts not giving a damn about mentally ill or otherwise incapacitated individuals. What makes you so sure about that? Did he come out and say it? He’s got a twitter, why not go there and ask him yourself before putting words and views in his mouth?

Lurks puts this into words far more eloquently than I could have. Excellent job.

It’s very obvious that Hoist is not unchanged by his experience, even just in the way he recounts his story. The way he dwells on seemingly inconsequential details and repeats himself—it’s clearly the product of a mind distressed by the subject it’s dwelling on.

Hoist is very insistent that he is a “normal” mech, and I think this is, in part, to reassure himself that he hasn’t let this experience damage him, when in fact it has. He’s overly-defensive and quick to separate himself from anyone he thinks of as damaged. It doesn’t make anything he said any less awful and rude, but it does explain why he’s so quick and acerbic when the subject is touched upon.

It’s because it’s a touchy subject.
